Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs

Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs

The Office of Career Services (OCS) administers funding which supports students enrolled in Harvard Summer School (HSS) Study Abroad Programs.

Thanks to generous donors, Harvard is one of only a few schools able to offer financial support for summer study abroad. We at OCS understand the process described below has multiple components.  We encourage you to visit us for drop-ins on weekdays 1-4pm if you have any questions about the application process.

Eligibility

  • Previously funded: Due to the expense of summer study abroad programs, OCS can only fund students who have not previously received money to pursue summer study abroad.
  • Standing: Students must be in good standing at the time of application and at the time of departure. Please notify us right away if your standing changes at any point.
  • Leaves of Absence: This funding source is for student who will not be on leave during the spring or fall of 2019.
  • Class year: This funding source is for first-years, sophomores, juniors, or students who are first-semester seniors during the spring of 2019.

Who Gets Funded

Last year OCS was able to fund about 50% of the students who applied for funding for HSS Study Abroad Programs. OCS primarily funds eight-week programs but will fund some students in each of the shorter HSS Study Abroad Programs. When there are more students accepted into the program than OCS funds can support, all deserving students will be put into a lottery for funding.

How to Apply

  • Apply directly to the HSS Study Abroad Program(s) in which you plan to participate by Thursday, January 31, 2019.
  • Complete the “OCS Funding Application for Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs” in CARAT by Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 5:00PM.

*Please note: If you are applying to two programs, you only need to submit one funding application. Follow the instructions below on how to list them in your CARAT application:

  • In your CARAT application, list your first-choice program in the Project Description Primary Location field. List your second-choice program in the Travel Secondary Location of Project field. If you do not have a preference between the 2 programs, please list the programs in any order and then email us at ocs_summerfunding@fas.harvard.edu to let us know that you do not have a preference.

Award Amounts

OCS awards for Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs are primarily funded by the David Rockefeller International Experience Grant as well as other funds from our Summer Funding Donors List.

Awards for selected students are as follows:

  • $1,500 for students not on Harvard financial aid;
  • Cost of program and travel stipend for students receiving Harvard financial aid*

* Please note funds are limited and student selection is not based on financial need. Not all students on financial aid are funded and admission to a program does not guarantee funding.

OCS and other funding centers at Harvard aim to distribute summer funding across the undergraduate community. Students are prohibited from accepting more than one substantial Harvard-funded summer opportunity each summer. In general, substantial experiences are defined as 8 weeks or longer. Students must disclose if they are receiving Harvard funding from any other source for any other projects at any point throughout the summer, the amount of the award, and the dates of the other project as soon as possible and no later than June 1 of the year of the award. OCS reserves the right to modify awards accordingly. Failure to promptly report other Harvard-funded summer activities may be reported to the Administrative Board.

Award Notification

Students will start to be notified of their OCS funding status on a rolling basis via email by late February 2019. Students selected for funding will have one week to accept or decline the award in order that declined awards may go to other deserving students. Not all students will be notified at the same time of their award status. All award or decline notices will be sent to students by mid-March 2019.

Students applying for OCS Summer Funding may submit one application for a Harvard Summer School program and are also welcome to submit one additional OCS application for international funding in any of the other categories. However, OCS will only review this second application if you are not offered, or decline, funding for a Harvard Summer School program.
