Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs

Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs

Deadline: Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 5:00pm

The Office of Career Services (OCS) administers funding which supports students enrolled in Harvard Summer School (HSS) Study Abroad Programs.

Thanks to generous donors, Harvard is one of only a few schools able to offer financial support for summer study abroad. We at OCS understand the process described below has multiple components, and encourage you to visit us for Drop-Ins on weekdays 1-4pm should you have any questions about the application process.

Students who are in good standing, complete the spring semester, are returning for the fall semester as full-time students, and have not previously received Harvard funding for an international experience of 4 weeks or longer are eligible to apply for this funding category. To be considered for funding, students must submit an application to both a Harvard Summer School program and to OCS Summer Funding.

Who Gets Funded

Last year OCS was able to fund about 50% of the students who applied for summer funding. OCS primarily funds 8-10 week programs but will fund some students in each of the shorter HSS Study Abroad Programs. Preference goes to juniors who have not yet received Harvard international funding, and all other eligible students will be considered equally thereafter. When there are more students accepted into the program than OCS funds can support, all deserving students will be put into a lottery for funding. Students are not always funded for their first choice program. Additionally, not all students on financial aid are funded and admission to a program does not guarantee funding.

Award Amounts

OCS awards for Harvard-Run International Programs are primarily funded by the David Rockefeller International Experience Grant and the James O’Neil Memorial Undergraduate Travel and Research Fund as well as other funds from our Summer Funding Donors List.

Awards for selected students are as follows:

  • $1,500 for students not on Harvard financial aid;
  • Program fee for students receiving some Harvard financial aid;*
  • Program fee plus airfare for students receiving high Harvard financial aid.*

* Please note funds are limited and student selection is not based on financial need. Not all students on financial aid are funded and admission to a program does not guarantee funding.

How to Apply

Apply directly to the HSS Study Abroad Program(s) in which you plan to participate by Thursday, January 25, 2018.

Complete the “OCS Funding Application for Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs” using CARAT by Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 5:00PM.

*Please note you may only submit ONE CARAT application for Harvard Summer School funding. If you are applying to two HSS programs, follow the instructions below on how to list them in your CARAT application:

  • If applying to more than one program, rank the programs in identical order on both the HSS program application and in CARAT. In your CARAT application, list your first choice program in the Project Description Primary Location field. List your second choice program in the Travel Secondary Location of Project field.

Award Notification

Students will start to be notified of their OCS funding status on a rolling basis via email by late February 2018. Students selected for funding will have one week to accept or decline the award in order that declined awards may go to other deserving students.

Not all students will be notified at the same time of their award status. All award or decline notices will be sent to students by mid-March 2018.

Students applying for OCS Summer Funding may submit one application for a Harvard Summer School program and are also welcome to submit one additional OCS application for international funding in any of the other categories. However, OCS will only review this second application if you are not offered, or decline, funding for a Harvard Summer School program.
