Coach for College (For Varsity Athletes)

Coach for College is a three-week volunteer program where student-athletes teach academic subjects and sports to children in rural Vietnam.

Apply online to the Coach for College program and to OCS for funding following the instructions below.

If you have questions, please come to OCS for drop-ins (M-F from 1-4 p.m.) or make an appointment with an adviser through Crimson Careers.

Important Dates

  1. January 27, 2020, 5:00pm - Deadline to apply for Coach for College program AND to OCS for funding
  2. Late March 2020 - Funding notifications go out on rolling basis
  3. Late March/early April 2020 - Deadline to accept/decline funding award
  4. April 10, 2020 - Deadline to submit pre-departure requirements to receive funding

Who Can Apply for Funding?:

OCS can only fund students who:

  1. Are varsity athletes
  2. Are in good academic standing at time of application and departure
  3. Are current Harvard College undergraduates, 1st-year through 1st semester senior.
  4. Are not on leave spring or fall 2020.

How to Apply:

  1. Apply directly to Coach for College. Enter “NA” in each of the essay question fields – essay questions will be answered separately in the Essay Questions Form (see below).
  2. Enroll in direct deposit.  See instructions from Student Financial Services.
  3. Apply in CARAT to Summer 2020-OCS Funding Application for Coach for College Student-Athlete Program by January 27, 2020, 5pm EST with the following materials:
    1. Completed Coach for College Essay Questions Form, saved in PDF format.
    2. One-page resume (.pdf, see OCS templates for guidance).
    3. Unofficial Transcript, available under "View Unofficial Transcript" link in the Grades tab of my.harvard.edu.
    4. Proof of Direct Deposit enrollment (screenshot pdf) - Submit a pdf of a screenshot of the section of my.harvard.edu that demonstrates that you are enrolled in direct deposit.

How Much is Awarded?:

  • OCS will cover the Coach for College program fee, which includes airfare.
  • Immunization costs are not included.

Important note about award amounts:

  • Each year, OCS is only able to fund about 50% of eligible funding applications - funding decisions are made by a committee and are not based on financial need
  • Not all students on financial aid are funded.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to cover or supplement any extra costs that are not included in the program fee (i.e. visas, personal expenses, immunizations, etc.).

International Volunteer and Research Programs

 

OCS offers funding for non-profit international volunteer or research programs that run for 8 weeks or longer in one location.

Students should apply directly to the program and to OCS funding. You do not need to have your placement confirmed before the funding application deadline. You will need to have confirmation of acceptance by late March to be considered for funding. International students are welcome to apply to opportunities outside of their home country. This funding source does not support study abroad programs (Harvard or non-Harvard).

  1. Engage in volunteer programs that are 8 weeks or longer, in one region and country
  2. Are in good academic standing at time of application and departure
  3. Are pursuing an international program outside the country where they are from or have lived for a significant amount of time. 
  4. Are current Harvard College undergraduates, 1st-year through 1st semester senior during spring of 2020.
  5. Are not on leave spring or fall 2020.

**Preference will be given to students who have NOT received prior funding**


How to Apply:

  1. Apply directly to an OCS-suggested research or volunteer program
  2. Enroll in direct deposit.  See instructions from Student Financial Services.
  3. Apply in CARAT to "Summer 2020-OCS Funding Application for Non-Harvard International Programs" by February 6, 2020, 5pm with the following materials:
    1. Proof of application or acceptance to organization (or screenshots of email correspondence showing you have inquired about internship opportunities). 
    2. Completed Eight-Week International Non-Harvard International Programs Form, saved in PDF format.
    3. One-page resume (.pdf, see OCS templates for guidance).
    4. Unofficial Transcript, available under "View Unofficial Transcript" link in the Grades tab of my.harvard.edu.
    5. One recommendation letter from a Harvard affiliate (faculty, TFs, proctors, tutors, academic advisers, coaches, mentors, supervisors, etc.). We cannot accept letters written by current undergraduate students, family members, or people outside the Harvard community. Make sure to complete this step well in advance of the funding deadline so your recommender has time to submit the letter
    6. Proof of Direct Deposit enrollment (screenshot pdf) - Submit a pdf of a screenshot of the section of my.harvard.edu that demonstrates that you are enrolled in direct deposit.

How Much is Awarded?:

  • $1500 for students not on Harvard financial aid.
  • Program fee (up to $8000) plus airfare for students on Harvard financial aid.

OCS will NOT fund:

  1. Volunteer programs in high risk countries or regions
  2. Volunteer programs in multiple countries or regions or for less than 8 weeks
